Shakespeare's First Folio Coming to Columbia

Thy life's a miracle.

King Lear (1608), Act IV, scene 6, line 55.

First Folio! The Book that Gave Us Shakespeare tours all 50 states, Washington, DC, and Puerto Rico and it will be on exhibit at the University of South Carolina April 11 – 30, 2016.  The First Folio was produced eleven years after Shakespeare's death in 1616. It is a compilation of Shakespeare's 36 plays into a book, also known as Mr. William Shakespeare’s Comedies, Histories, & Tragedies. The First Folio is a treasure trove, containing 18 previously unpublished works including Julius Caesar, Macbeth and The Tempest

The exhibition, which also includes panels and digital content, exclusively features First Folios from the Folger, whose collection of 82 First Folios is by far the largest in the world. Visitors to First Folio! will come face to face with the original 1623 book, displayed open to Hamlet's speech in which he debates whether "to be or not to be."

We'll be celebrating this book that saved so many of Shakespeare's dramas and the Bard's enduring inspiration with special events and activities. Checkout our events listed below and see our full calendar here. Click here for a full listing of citywide events. #librariestransform #FirstFolio @UofSC
